Computing Curriculum Overview

Curriculum Journey

Intent

At Berkley School we aim to develop thinkers of the future through a modern and ambitious computing curriculum. We want pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to become confident, active participants in the digital world.

Children learn to use technology to express themselves, support their learning, and shape their future. We promote safe, respectful, and responsible use of technology, helping pupils understand both the benefits and risks of online experiences.

Our curriculum balances deep knowledge with practical digital skills, and we provide opportunities for pupils to apply their learning across the wider curriculum.

Implementation

We follow the Teach Computing curriculum, chosen for its expert design and research-based approach. It covers all aspects of the National Curriculum through three strands: computer science, information technology, and digital literacy.

Lessons build on prior knowledge and are adapted to meet pupils’ needs. Online safety is embedded throughout, with agreed class rules, dedicated units, and participation in Safer Internet Day. Parents are regularly updated with online safety guidance.

Impact

Pupils develop the skills to use technology confidently, safely, and effectively. They learn key vocabulary and concepts, apply their knowledge across subjects, and reflect on their progress through self-assessment and end-of-unit evaluations.

Our computing curriculum supports wider personal development, including problem-solving, teamwork, leadership, and digital citizenship.

What We Teach

Our computing curriculum is designed to give children a strong foundation in:

  • Coding and Programming
Pupils learn how to write and test simple programs, solve problems, and understand how digital systems work. These skills are taught in a fun and practical way using age-appropriate tools.

  • Online Safety
Children follow a clear and progressive e-safety programme that teaches them how to stay safe online, communicate respectfully, and understand the importance of acting responsibly and legally in the digital world.

  • Digital Literacy and Communication
Pupils use a range of applications to create, present, and share their ideas. They learn how to use technology to support their learning across subjects, from writing and art to science and maths.

  • Understanding Technology
Children explore how devices are connected and how information is shared. They begin to understand the role of technology in the world around them.

  • Data Handling
Pupils learn how to collect, organise, and interpret data using simple tools, helping them to make sense of information and use it effectively.

How We Teach It

We are well-equipped with a bank of laptops and iPads, which are used regularly in lessons. Computing is taught both as a standalone subject and as a tool to enhance learning across the curriculum. This ensures that children not only develop specific computing skills but also learn how to apply them in meaningful ways.
